Sometimes it’s simply amusing

I couldn’t resist taking this image. I’m often on the lookout for fanatic dog lovers here. Korea, of course, has the infamous reputation of a land that, well, you know, you’ve heard, I’m sure! So, it strikes me as curious, and amusing, when I see such affection lavished out on dogs. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good, and my feelings aren’t peppered with patronising, smugness at all. But frankly, I’m not even fond of smaller, doll like canines at all. So, it genuinely is amusing to see these little booties on the dog’s feet. They’re silver booties, too. It caused me to wonder for a moment: are these to keep the pups feet warm; or clean. Or, maybe it was something else entirely. Well, if I have my way, you might see more pictures of little dogs here, similarly lavished with affections, and doggie clothing.

All part of, what is for me, the curious and endearing land of contradictions, which is Korea.

It is an amusing fact of life. I guess it is probably to do with the fact that people have become so disconnected in the daily grind in the big cities, that they need to express their nurturing instincts on animals and others on plants. It is natural, yet some people tend to imbue their pets with human qualities and hence their treatment. It is a sad fact, though, that some people treat their pets a lot better than they would other people (I know this is a cliche, but it is true).

I think you could be right about this, Johannes. And in a strange way, here in Korea, at least, having a pet seems to be a fashion statement in and of itself. This is a subjective observation on my part, and I don’t know how much truth is in it, but the hyper-paced life in Korea, as it is, seems to leave a lot of pet victims too. People change their lifestyle preferences very rapidly here, and the culture is more transient than one would think.
